With the frozen yogurt craze increasing with popularity day by day, there have been a wide range of reports on the health benefits of frozen yogurt… just as there have been some outlandish claims. Let us clear up some of the fog below, where we will discuss froyo nutrition… sit back, relax, and here we go:
First of all, let’s start with plain old yogurt which has been around, and valued for centuries as having outstanding health benefits for the young and old. The reason yogurt is touted in such a way, is with much thanks to the tiny living micro-organisms known as ‘probiotics’… organisms believed to improve health.
Frozen yogurt is exactly the same, including the one we serve from our trusty little van, teaming with the ‘friendly bacteria’ know as Bifidobacterium lactis, and Lactobacillus paracasei. These bacteria then grow in the intestinal tract of humans making the body healthier when eaten in adequate amounts. Yeow! 😀
Probiotic Bacteria provide their benefits by adjusting the microflora in the intestines, or by acting directly on bodily functions, such as digestion or immune function. For example, the lactobacteria in frozen yoghurt stimulate the production of immunoglobulin A, the primary immune system molecule that protects the human body from foreign pathogens. So without getting too scientific on you, let’s look at some of the other health benefits associated with eating probiotic rich frozen yogurt on a regular basis:
– Lowers cholesterol levels
– Boosts immune system
– Improves mineral absorption
– Protects against infection
– Protects against harmful bacteria growth
– Increases fat loss
– Builds bone density
– Protects against ulcers
– Prevents osteoporosis
– Lowers blood pressure
– Manages Urogenital health
– Reduces risk of Colon Cancer
– Improves Irritable Bowel Syndrome
As you can see, there is a lot more to frozen yogurt or ‘FROYO’ than meets the eye! It’s delicious, it’s refreshing, it’s fun to eat, and oh so healthy for you. One problem we have eliminated that you are likely to run into when serving yourself at a self-serve store is choosing the wrong condiments and/or toppings to go with your frozen yogurt, and thus cancelling out the nutritional benefits you’d otherwise be getting.
If you would love to retain all the health benefits that frozen yogurt provides, be sure to gravitate towards froyo toppings that consist of fresh fruit, nuts, and dark chocolate (not diary!)… by opting for such options, you will only enhance the flavour and nutritional benefits of your snack/dessert. We love froyo!
